The company rose from near-irrelevance to rival BMW and Mercedes largely by touting the advantages of its Quattro system. Which makes the idea...  of a rear-drive R8 rather odd.And yet, here it is. It's called the R8 RWS, and that stands for "rear-wheel series," not "rear-wheel steering," as one might assume. Maybe that confusion helped slip the car past management. Perhaps it was also the fact that the automaker's high-performance division recently changed its name from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport.Part of selling the layout, both within the company and to buyers, is that it's a tribute to the rear-drive R8 LMS GT4, the customer racing car that debuted earlier this year. Audi claims that the R8 RWS shares 60 percent of its makeup with its track-only counterpart. It has also made sure the R8 RWS will be a rare sight. Worldwide there will be 999. The United States gets 320, which amounts to less than half of the 750 or so R8s sold here in a given year.Undoing Quattro involves removing the front differential and driveshafts, swapping out hollow rear driveshafts for solid ones, and giving the rear wheels a half-degree more negative camber. Ditching those parts saves 110 pounds, but even without all-wheel drive, the R8 RWS still weighs a hefty 3627 pounds, according to Audi. The claimed 0-to-60 time is 3.7 seconds–two-tenths more than in the all-wheel-drive R8 with the same 5.2-liter V-10 engine.Why bother? By way of an answer, Audi brought us to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The change to rear drive is subtle. Pressed hard into corners, the R8 RWS is a little more prone to letting the tail slide, which makes it more challenging and involving to drive. Steering feedback is as clear as we remember, and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is as quick-shifting, smooth, and smart as it is in the regular version. (Alas, even the rear-drive R8 won't resurrect the original's clinkitty-clink, gated manual shifter.) And of course, it's ungodly powerful and fun. Ripping the 532-hp V-10 to its 8500-rpm redline is as life-affirming here as it is in the R8 V10 Quattro—just don't affirm too early on corner exit, or the back end will step out.
