Own the Car We Thought Would Save Us, Back When We Thought We Could Prevent Doomsday BMW i3: Relive the Senseless Optimism of a Bygone Era Take yourself back to 2013. Back when we still thought we could prevent the great collapse. Back when we still had hope. Scarcely 20 years earlier, with the Kyoto Protocol -- signed in 1992, when CO2 was still at 350 ppm -- so many nations had pledged that we would hit the brakes, and prevent our demise. By 2013, CO2 was at 395 ppm - bad, but still below the line we had naively drawn at 400 ppm —- so there was still something we could do. Things were still under our control. Soon, 120 countries would sign and ratify the Paris Agreement, and by doing so, swear that we would, for sure this time, keep CO2 to below 400 ppm. All the while, CO2 kept rising. Temperatures rose. And the weather became more extreme, giving us both record droughts and record rainfalls. Floods became commonplace, both from the sea and from the rain, and cities started cordoning off whole blocks, while homes sank and farms became swamps. But there was still hope. There was still optimism. And remembering that ray of hope, while knowing that it would all come to nothing, is why the BMW i3 is the car for you. The Car We Made When We Believed Enough People Would Care In the heady era when the i3 was created, some people made a lot of effort to do things differently -- to reduce their emissions, to cut their footprint, to Do Their Part. Not enough people, of course -- not even close -- so it didn't end up making any difference, and billions were still very much doomed to perish. But their senseless optimism, innocent virtue and well-intentioned spirit is captured forever in this historic automobile, the BMW i3. For it was during this moment that BMW, a German brand, created a car that, like no other, represents the ethos of Pre-Collapse Humanity, circa 2013: the i3. The i3 was purposely designed to have the lowest possible environmental footprint throughout its life. And it was all done transparently -- something that its designers naively, and tragically, hoped might catch-on more broadly within BMW and across the automotive industry. “For the first time in the history of the BMW Group, we already defined sustainable targets for a newly designed vehicle over the entire value chain during the early strategic phase,” explained Ulrich Kranz, Senior Vice President BMW i, when talking about the car in a 2013 interview. “The inspection looked at the entire life cycle from extraction of raw materials and manufacture, through usage to recycling, in order to take account of all environmental aspects. The fact that this approach and its results are now being verified by a neutral agency demonstrates that we have adopted a pioneering roadmap”. Finally: A Car that Celebrates Man's Self-Delusion, Hypocrisy, and Hubris The irony, of course (and what makes the i3 such a great icon of its era, with all its decadence, hypocrisies and contradictions) is that this very same company - BMW - was, at that very moment, playing an active role in several major environmental crimes. This was the same BMW that was complicit in "dieselgate," one of history's largest-scale frauds and cover-ups. Several big German brands, including BMW, created cars specially designed to cheat on emissions tests. These cars all eventually released far more climate change gasses into the air than allowed by law, and probably hastened the Collapse by 2-3 years just in themselves. For this crime against all of civilization, BMW, a large multinational luxury automaker, was fined: $9.7 million. This was the same BMW that, between 2006 and 2014 -- right when the i3 was created and released! -- was illegally colluding with 4 other German car companies to block the rollout of emissions-reducing technologies, according to allegations in charges brought in 2019. You'd think that public embarrassment and shame would have hurt the company, but you must put yourself back into a Pre-Collapse Civilization mindset. Life was very different then, and people hadn't yet learned to control their natural tendency towards unwarranted optimism. So no, it didn't make a difference. BMW thrived, and consumers didn't notice. And when BMW released the i3, reviewers swooned. It has a rear-view camera 10. The mirrors retract 11. It's made with renewable and recyclable materials 12. It's much lighter than most cars 13. It has as much interior space as a sedan 14. It's really really easy to park 15. You can charge it using just a regular wall plug 16. The front of the car, between the two front seats, is wide open because there is no drivetrain or gear shift in the way 17. There is a "remember peace" sticker on the back 18. Note: It has a small knick on one of the back doors, which I've had fixed but you can still kinda tell. Otherwise in great condition! You should buy this car because if you're going to be alive to bear witness to the last stand of Man against the unstoppable march his own appetites, then by God, you're going to be cheering on the side of Man.
