This Jetta is powered by a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain (hence the name Hybrid) consisting of an all aluminum 1.4 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder gas engine coupled to a lithium-ion battery powered electric motor. This results in a combined output of 170 horsepower and more significant, 184 lb-ft. of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. Power is then routed to a 7-speed automated manual transmission that drives the front wheels. This powertrain combined with excellent aerodynamics and numerous gas saving features, allows the Jetta Hybrid to achieve fuel economy exceeding that of the diesel model without any of the diesel’s drawbacks. Between the turbocharged engine, 7-speed transmission, sport tuned suspension and chassis, it’s no wonder the Jetta Hybrid is considered the performance car of hybrids. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE JETTA HYBRID A hybrid powertrain combines the best features of two different propulsion systems into one integrated seamless powerplant. An internal combustion engine produces little power and torque at idle and low engine speeds but greater power as the RPMs increase. An electric motor on the other hand puts out its maximum torque at ZERO rpm. What that means is you can utilize the maximum torque output of the electric motor when accelerating from a stop, and the greater power output of the gas engine at higher RPMs for cruising at highway speeds, or any combination of both at speeds in between, to optimize both acceleration and fuel economy. Additional benefits of this system are regenerative braking that makes use of energy that other cars waste while braking and coasting by recharging the battery pack, and engine cut-off at stop lights when other cars are wasting gas idling. The Jetta Hybrid’s 16-valve 1.4 liter TSI® (Turbo Stratified Injection) turbocharged engine has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, excellent economy and inherent smoothness. Known by Volkswagen as the EA211 engine family and code named CNLA in this application, the engine features an aluminum engine block and cylinder head for light weight and excellent heat dissipation, cast iron cylinder liners for maximum durability, dual overhead cams (DOHC) with variable valve timing on both cams for maximum power output at all engine speeds, hydraulic valve lifters that never need adjustment unlike some cars that need periodic valve adjustments, an integral exhaust driven turbocharger to eliminate turbo lag along with an intercooler for a dense intake charge, high pressure direct fuel injection with a 10.5:1 compression ratio for high efficiency, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. Introduced in 2015, the EA211 engine may seem similar to the EA111 it replaced, but it’s a completely new design and is better in all respects. VW finally went to timing belts on these engines, eliminating timing chain stretch which previously destroyed many engines with tensioner problems. The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG® (Direct Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission with Sport and Tiptronic® modes. The DSG® can be thought of as an automated manual transmission without the need for a clutch pedal. The DSG® combines the ease of driving an automatic with the more direct power transmission and better fuel economy of a manual transmission. Known as model DQ200, this transmission contains two independent gearbox units along with dual-clutch technology – two clutches in a common housing. Clutch 1 serves the first gearbox unit with 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and reverse, while clutch 2 serves the second gearbox unit with 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear. One gearbox pre-selects first gear while the second one puts the next gear on standby. As the gearbox changes to second, the second gearbox is engaged and the original gearbox reaches third. As you shift upwards the sequence continues in a series of seamless moves. Because power is simply switched from one gearbox to another, not only are gear shifts smooth, but they are also very fast: each change a few hundredths of a second. The DSG® transmission gives you a choice of two driving modes: Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, the engine stays at higher rpms longer before shifting up and downshifts sooner for more spirited driving maneuvers. If you want to take over completely, you can control the DSG® manually in Tiptronic® mode. Place the shifter in D and move it to the right, then nudge it forward or backward to change gears up or down. Whichever gear you are currently in is shown in the multi-function display. Even in Tiptronic® mode, the transmission will automatically downshift as you brake to a stop. To prevent engine damage, it will automatically upshift before reaching maximum engine speed and prevent downshifts if doing so would over-rev the engine. The Jetta Hybrid’s powertrain consists of a 27 horspower electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission to boost the car’s performance when needed and to operate in all electric mode (E-mode). On light acceleration, the car will start off in electric mode (E-mode) and the gas engine will kick in seamlessly as power demand increases to boost the car’s performance. An E-MODE button in the dash lets you increase the threshold (delay) at which the gas engine kicks in allowing extended all-electric driving up to 44 mph. I’ve been able to go nearly 2 miles depending on traffic and terrain, before the battery ran down enough that the gas motor kicked in to recharge it. Plus, in stop and go bumper to bumper traffic you can go many minutes with the engine off. And the gas engine will shut off at higher speeds when coasting or on long downhill grades at highway speed when there is little or no accelerator input. During braking the motor also serves as a generator (a.k.a. regenerative braking) to recharge a 220 volt lithium-ion battery pack located between the rear seats and trunk. Think of this battery system as a supercharger in addition to the gas engine’s turbocharger that provides additional performance without using much energy, and in fact, because it recovers the Jetta’s momentum to recharge the battery pack, it’s more efficient than any supercharger could ever be. The engine doesn’t have an alternator. The electric motor keeps the high voltage battery pack charged and an inverter powers most 12 volt electricals including keeping the 12V battery charged, which itself is mainly used just to power up the control modules when you first press the start button. The electric motor starts the engine most of the time, and in fact, you may go for years without ever using the conventional 12 volt starter. About the only time the 12V starter is used is if the high voltage battery pack is discharged from the car sitting a few months. Li-ion battery technology is superior to the nickel-metal hydride batteries many car makers were putting in their hybrids at that time. Both in terms of capacity per pound and capacity by volume, but more importantly, durability, allowing significantly greater charge/discharge cycles and virtually no memory effect for an exceptionally long service life. In comparison, NiMH batteries used in some other hybrids and electric cars have degradation and outright failure rates more frequently than Li-ion equipped cars. The Jetta Hybrid has numerous tweaks to save fuel including an extensive use of ultra high strength steel (UHSS) body panels and inner structural components for reduced weight, light weight aerodynamic face design aluminum wheels, low rolling resistance tires (original equipment), a mini front air dam and rear spoiler and numerous Hybrid specific underbody panels for greater aerodynamic efficiency, electrically assisted power steering that reduces parasitic losses on the engine, and probably the best feature is the electric mode that allows engine-off operation while driving and when stopped and provides you with an eerie silence at most every traffic light. Quite soothing after a long day at the office. The Jetta Hybrid also has an electric air conditioning compressor so even when the engine is off, you have normal cooling. Many hybrids have belt driven compressors so when the engine cuts off, so does the compressor and either the interior gets uncomfortable or the engine kicks in and defeats the economy benefits of engine-off operation. Finally, the transmission itself with 7 speeds to optimize engine output providing brisk acceleration from a stoplight with a low first gear, while a high top gear ratio allows for effortless highway cruising. In fact, at 60 mph, the engine is only turning at 1,700 rpm, and at 75 mph just 2,100 rpm which is very low for such a small engine and which contributes to the excellent gas mileage. When you combine all these features with a curb weight nearly the same as a Jetta TDI, the Jetta Hybrid earns a much better EPA mileage rating than the TDI in all three categories. 41 MPG city vs. 29 MPG for the TDI. 48 MPG highway vs. 37 MPG for the TDI. 44 MPG combined vs. 32 MPG for the TDI. And those numbers are obtained in a lab under simulated driving conditions. You can do a bit better with just a minor adjustment to your driving style and I have topped 50 MPG on the highway myself. And if you practice any hypermiling techniques, you can get even higher figures, with some owners reporting continuously breaking the 60 mpg mark and even exceeding the 75 mpg barrier for short distances. (Disclaimer: YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY) Combined with the Jetta’s 11.8 gallon fuel tank, it’s hard not to get at least 500 miles between fill-ups. Not only is the Jetta Hybrid economical to drive, it’s also economical to maintain. Most systems have low or reduced maintenance components. For example, the timing belt has a 150,000 mile service interval and the engine has hydraulic valve lifters so no valve adjustments are required. The cooling system uses extended life coolant good for 100,000 miles and the transmission, since its basically a manual, doesn’t have a fluid change interval but most would suggest 100,000 miles as well. Rounding out the Jetta are brakes, steering and suspension made to carve up twisting roads while still providing a smooth comfortable ride on pot marked city streets. Start off with a rigid chassis and unit body construction with laser seam welding for a stiff foundation and add in a four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link setup in the rear as well as anti-roll bars all around. Add speed-sensitive variable-assist electric rack and pinion steering (EPS) and 17 inch low profile tires for precise handling. For secure braking there are 4 wheel discs with Anit-Lock Brakes (ABS) and the Brake Assist System (BAS) that can sense panic stopping and automatically apply all available power brake boost instantly to potentially reduce stopping distances. For maximum control in all road conditions, Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) along with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL and XDL) uses the components from the ABS system and the electronic throttle to regulate engine torque to enhance directional control with over/understeering of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel to create a countervailing vehicle movement. It goes without saying that the Jetta Hybrid is one of the most fun hybrid cars to drive, and that it’s quicker, faster and handles better than most other cars in it’s class. The Jetta Hybrid’s exterior style is sharp and attractive. From its sleek lines and soft angles incorporating elements from premium European sports sedans, it looks handsome from any angle without being flashy. A quick walk around the car reveals how the Jetta is one of the most stylish vehicles ever created in the mid-size class of automobiles. Start up front with its sharp sleek lines including a gloss black upper grille with Ocean Blue glow effect HYBRID and VW emblems. The grille is surrounded by clear lens projector beam Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. The matching larger lower air intake grille is flanked on both sides with inset fog lights. The hood has a curved notch at the front highlighting the VW emblem, then two sharp creases on the sides integrate with the fenders for a muscular look. Next, a steeply raked windshield and sleek fender flares flow into smooth curves along the sides of the car with body colored door handles and mirrors for a monochromatic look. The mirrors incorporate chic euro style LED secondary turn signal lights (repeaters). Scuff resistant black rocker panel moldings add visual appeal as do the beautiful Buenos Aires design aluminum wheels with bright machine finish faces and angular gloss black spokes. On the roof a low profile shark fin antenna adds another euro touch. Then, going back, the cars’ lines meld into a raked rear window with a white lens LED center brake light and short trunk lid accented by a body color low profile spoiler. Under the spoiler, large angular LED taillights provide excellent visibility, as do the reflectors in the bumper. A black lower valance below the bumper accentuates the rear styling. The exterior is beautiful to look at, but if you like high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. With the keys left in you pocket or purse, just grab the door handle and it unlocks automatically as you open the door. Get in and sit down into a sport bucket seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for height adjustment, recline and lumbar support. Check out how supportive the side bolsters are and how comfortable the cushions feel. Then adjust the tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel to achieve complete driving control. Notice how the racecar inspired flat bottom shape and thickly padded rim affords just the right grip and that the cruise control and infotainment switches are just a fingertip away. Brushed aluminum and chrome trim add visual appeal. Now glance above you at the large glass moonroof that lets in light in all weather conditions and opens up on nice sunny days. Next, look ahead at the dashboard with the large easy to read gauges including a 160 mph speedometer. If it’s nighttime, turn on the lights and see the night vision red illumination and how quickly your eyes adjust to the light. Look right and left at more brushed aluminum and chrome trim on the doors and center console as well as on the air vents and radio knobs in the center stack. Finally, glance down at the shifter with its aluminum trim and leather boot and the handbrake with leather boot as well. Look at the sport pedals with stainless steel trim as well as a real dead pedal. Not only is the styling all sport, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the perforations of the leather wrapped steering wheel, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. Now step on the brake pedal and press the ENGINE START button and feel how smooth the engine idles. Reflect on how convenient it has been never to have to dig out the keys from your pocket or purse to enter or drive the car. Next, take it for a spin. Put it in reverse and back out confidently seeing the view behind the car from the backup camera displayed in the infotainment screen and the parking sensors alerting you if you are getting too close to an object or if an unseen car approaches, the Rear Traffic Alert system automatically brakes the car to avoid a collision. Once out on the road, notice how the DSG transmission fluidly transfers power to the pavement compared to any manual transmission car you’ve driven before, but with all the convenience of an automatic. Shifts are fast and feel silky smooth to give a whole other dimension to the driving experience. Now accelerate hard and enjoy the power as the turbo pins you back in your seat without any lag and use the Tipronic® mode if the mood strikes you to go through the gears manually. As traffic ahead stops for a red light, notice how the engine shuts off as you approach. When you come to a stop, enjoy the silence as you wonder why all cars don’t shut their engines off at stop lights as well. When the light turns green, lightly step on the gas---err, electricity, as the car takes off on electric power alone, but if rapid acceleration is required from a stop, the gas engine kicks in instantly. If you want use minimal gas or just enjoy a smoother quieter ride, press the E-MODE button which will maximize electric drive operation up to 44 mph. E-MODE is primarily for around town driving and shuts off at 45 mph, but there are still instances at highway speeds, 60 or 70 mph, where the car operates in electric mode as the gas engine is off. In 2015 the Volkswagen Jetta was sold in six versions. Base, S, SE, Sport, SEL and SEL Premium. Only the Hybrid was available in SEL Premium trim which included all the content that Volkswagen offered. No factory options were listed beyond color choice. Details of some of the premium features that weren’t mentioned before are described in more detail here. JETTA HYBRID PREMIUM FEATURES Hill Hold Assistance keeps the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting out on a hill. Since the transmission is basically a manual, (but automated) the vehicle can roll back between the time you take your foot off the brake and press the accelerator. This feature keeps brake pressure applied up to 2 seconds until you press on the accelerator. Keyless Access and Keyless Start lets you enter a locked car and start it without ever removing the keys from your pocket or purse. It works on the trunk too, as well as when exiting the vehicle by touching the door handle to lock the car. A beep confirms it’s locked. The Convenience closing feature is available by holding a finger on the handle to close all windows and moonroof at once. The conventional remote can still be used normally to lock and unlock from a distance. Back-Up Camera comes on automatically when you put the transmission in reverse to assist the driver while maneuvering in reverse with the area behind the car being displayed on the screen. Orientation lines on the display help guide you into parking spaces. Park Distance Control (PDC) supplements the back-up camera. It uses sensors in the bumpers to measure the distance between the vehicle and objects. If the vehicle gets close to an obstacle, a beeping signal sounds. The closer the vehicle gets the faster the beep. When the obstacle is very close, the sound is continuous. The areas scanned by the sensors are displayed on the screen as well as the position of potential objects relative to the vehicle. The SEL Premium has sensors in both the rear AND the front bumpers. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert assists the driver by monitoring traffic that ordinarily isn’t visible in his blind spots. An indicator in each outside mirror lights up when another vehicle is at the side of the car and would not normally be seen in the mirror, i.e. in your blind spot. The indicator flashes if the turn signal is activated for a more noticeable alert. Rear Traffic Alert monitors traffic crossing behind your vehicle such as when backing out of a parking space with limited visibility. A warning sounds if a vehicle is approaching. If you don’t stop, the system can automatically intervene and apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS) features projector beam lights that respond to steering inputs and can illuminate curved sections of the road ahead. The swivel-mounted headlights improve road illumination during cornering by directing light into that corner. They include High Intensity Discharge (HID) Bi-Xenon headlights which provide a much brighter and longer reaching light beam than conventional headlights. LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) provide added daytime visibility and they also look great. In addition, the fog lights act as secondary static cornering lights when the light on one side of the car comes on when you turn into that corner. LED tail and brake lights illuminate slightly faster and bright than conventional bulbs giving the person behind you a quicker warning during panic stopping that could be enough to avoid an accident. TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) monitors the slight differences between wheel speeds and thus their diameter to determine low tire pressure. It doesn’t require valve stem sensors like some other systems do so you never have to replace one after it’s battery wears out or risk damaging one when a tire is changed. Also you won’t run into problems if you want to install custom wheels. There is a switch in the glove box allowing the driver to reset the system themselves instead of taking it in to a shop. No Alternator and Electric A/C Compressor as previously described means no serpentine belt or belt tensioner to wear out. Volkswagen Car-Net® along with a smartphone app allows for remote vehicle diagnostics, automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle locator, parking lot car finder, boundary and speed alerts, roadside assistance, remote vehicle unlocking and access to your music, maps, messaging, etc. among other cool features. If you have teen drivers, boundary alert lets you designate an area on a map as a “virtual fence,” then if the vehicle is driven outside that boundary, an email or text is sent to your phone. Speed alert does the same for drivers exceeding a preset speed. Parking lot finder lets you send a signal from your smartphone to blow the horn and flash the lights to help find the car in a large crowded parking lot. LATCH® System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) rear child seat anchors allows you to quickly and easily install up to three seats without using the seatbelts. Anchorages provide a secure and easy-to-use attachment and minimize the possibility of improper child restraint installation. Rain Sensing Wipers automatically regulate the speed of the wipers by the amount of rain hitting the windshield. If your speed increases, the wipers automatically wipe faster. No need to constantly adjust the intermittent setting in stop and go traffic or changing weather conditions. It has an excellent body with just the normal minor nicks, dings and scratches you would expect on a car of this age or mileage. The only items to note include a quarter size cut and many touched-up small nicks on the edge of the rear bumper, a shallow dent in the right rear door with no paint damage and the left corner of front bumper is slightly misaligned from the edge of the fender. The paint itself is beautiful and shiny and this shade of Oryx White just about glows in the sunlight. It is a pearl finish, and as such, has incredible depth and vibrance that ordinary metallic paints can’t match. It has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish, topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax and then sealed with Meguiar’s Ultimate Fast Finish for a long lasting brilliant high gloss shine. All the glass, moldings, trim and emblems are excellent. I checked the car out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked or that it even has had any previous paint or bodywork done to it. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a two or three year old or 30,000 mile vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a hood or fender to be replaced or repaired, let alone a car with over 100,000 miles on it. In addition, this Jetta Hybrid has all it’s underbody panels installed. If a mechanic forgets to replace a panel after an oil change or you run over a curb and break one off, your gas mileage may suffer as the aerodynamics under a car are just as important as above it. If you are looking at other Jetta Hybrids for sale as well, check underneath and make sure all the following panels are still intact as they are not cheap to replace. Front air dam: Front underbody panel: Rear underbody panels: The interior is in great condition as well. It has nice upholstery, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of wear. The car doesn‘t appear to have been smoked in. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter or ash tray. The trunk doesn’t look like it was ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of. Mechanically it runs and drives great too. The engine runs strong and feels smooth while idling, accelerating and throughout the cruising range and it starts instantly whether hot or cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold and it has a set of four new tires. They have been balanced with weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $5,000 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Volkswagen or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. What that means is the CHECK ENGINE light wasn’t reset in order to turn it off to hide an existing fault. If an emissions component has a fault causing the CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate, the emissions readiness monitors will be incomplete plus the car won’t pass an emissions inspection. Some sellers will reset the CHECK ENGINE light to make it appear like there are no issues at the time of sale, but the light will come back on shortly afterwards. It can take hundreds of miles for the readiness monitors to run to completion, so the fact that the readiness monitors have been completed indicates the CHECK ENGINE light hasn’t been reset and that at the time the car was scanned, it would pass an emissions inspection. (That isn’t a guaranty that the light won’t come on in the future as a fault can occur at any time without warning.) So other than routine oil and filter changes, with all the above mentioned servicing the car has recently received, you should be good to go for another 150,000 miles before requiring major maintenance. Overall this is a very sharp car that looks great in the Oryx Pearl White color. That color was exclusive to the Hybrid version of the Jetta, and in fact, only one other Volkswagen was available in it. The Golf R. Few people know Volkswagen even made a Jetta Hybrid so you’re sure to get many questions and complements about it at the mall or supermarket parking lot from total strangers. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this car you won’t have to spend $2,000 on a Mechatronic unit, you won’t have to spend $1,000 on a timing belt service, you won’t have to spend $500 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant and brake fluid flush, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. The Jetta Hybrid was first sold as a 2013 model. Being the first year of production, it naturally had some bugs that needed to be sorted out. If you are also looking at some 2013’s, keep in mind they had issues with the Mechatronic unit that didn’t manifest itself for a while such that an updated version wasn’t used until the 2014s came out. The Mechatronic is a part attached to the transmission that controls the shifting of the gears and activating the clutch. It wasn’t unusual for the Mechatronic unit to go bad at 60,000 or 80,000 miles. Make sure you know before you buy a 2013 with over 80,000 miles when and if the Mechatronic was replaced, otherwise you might have to replace it yourself in the near future. But because it was a hot model, most dealers were adding additional market adjustment markups (read rip off), so with tax, title and tags, the out the door price was over $36,000! I have the Buy It Now price at more than $1,000 below that which is only about 30% of the price new. Finding a 3 year old car selling for better than one-third of what it cost new is almost unheard of outside of damaged or totaled cars. While most dealers just buy a car to flip in a week or two, I bought this car at a dealer auction last April to use as one of my personal drivers which is why I serviced it top to bottom. And I’m also passing on the savings in this Ebay auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. So there is no point in making lowball $6,000 or $7,000 offers. If you are looking for a Jetta Hybrid in beautiful condition at a good price, then this car is hard to beat. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered.
